Antarctica Matters and Why?

Mandip and Anita Soin led Ibex Expeditions has launched a global advocacy campaign, #AntarcticaMatters, to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect Antarctica—one of the planet’s most fragile and vital ecosystems. This initiative was first initiated in 2017 during their maiden journey to the 7th Continent, spearheaded by them; a second expedition with 69 members was undertaken in February 2026 aboard the Ocean Explorer, operated by Quark Expeditions.

Protecting Antarctica’s Future

The campaign focuses on safeguarding Antarctica under the Antarctic Treaty System, which currently prohibits mining and commercial exploitation of the continent.

With the treaty due for review in 2048, this campaign underscores the urgency for governments, Civil society, travellers and global organisations to advocate for the continuation of its protective framework.

Why Antarctica Matters

Antarctica plays a critical role in regulating Earth’s climate. Any disturbance to this delicate ecosystem could have severe global consequences, including rising sea levels, disrupted weather systems and long-term climate instability

A Legacy of Human Endurance

Beyond its environmental importance, Antarctica stands as a symbol of human courage and exploration. Its history is shaped by extraordinary feats such as Ernest Shackleton’s legendary survival journey and the race to the South Pole between Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen. As the 2048 Antarctica Treaty review approaches, this moment represents a critical opportunity to strengthen global commitment toward conservation.

Collective Action for Conservation

The #AntarcticaMatters campaign brings together a wide network of organisations committed to Responsible tourism, environmental stewardship and global advocacy. The diverse support reflects a shared commitment to responsible travel and the power of collaboration in driving meaningful environmental change.

Responsible Tourism in Action.

As part of this initiative, all participants on the 2026 expedition took a Polar Pledge, committing to advocate for Antarctica’s protection, promote awareness within their communities and support long-term conservation efforts. This reinforces the idea that responsible travel can be a powerful tool for global awareness and environmental action.
